About the MPBW Scholarship Program

In 1989 Metropolitan BPW established a scholarship, named in honor of founding member, Ruth Moss Easterling.  The Ruth Moss Easterling Scholarship has awarded thousands of dollars over the years to NC universities and colleges.  Through the years we have focused our giving to non-traditional students who might not have otherwise had a chance to achieve their dream of higher education. 

Each candidates for funding, has a careful review of their achievements, both in school and in the community.  We look at a personal statement written by each applicant and review the information on the applications.  Our Scholarship Committee makes the decision on the recipients for each year, based on the amount of funds we have to distribute that year.

About BPW’s Endowment Fund

In addition to Metropolitan BPW annual awards for scholarships, we have established an Endowment at UNC-Charlotte.  Once again, we have named this in honor of Ruth Moss Easterling.  Ruth Easterling was committed to issues affecting women and families for her entire career.  She was courageous in representing, vocalizing, and voting for the rights of women.  She was a remarkable woman with creativity and vision.

Ruth Easterling served the North Carolina House of Representatives for 13 remarkable sessions.  She also was one of the founders of the Charlotte Women’s Political Caucus in 1971.  She recognized the need for an organization of business and professional women that was respectful of the demands on a professional woman’s time.  Subsequently, she created and organized Metropolitan Business and Professional Women.  She served as BPW’s State President and as National President of BPW.

The Ruth Moss Easterling Scholarship Endowment Fund was established in 2007 with the goal of having a fund that would serve in perpetuity, generating income to fund scholarships in the future to deserving students.  Donations to the Endowment can be made through Metro BPW or directly to UNC-Charlotte, designating the Fund as the receiver.
